Amazon may be censoring Queer SF…sigh

It seems that Amazon may be sending Queer SF lit into the netherworld. I don’t know how to feel about this. As a bookseller, I screamed and screamed as much as I could to warn people that letting any one place be the main distributor of books in our country was a really, really bad a idea. It didn’t seem like anyone really wanted to listen or even take me (or any other independent booksellers) seriously. One author, who shall remain nameless, even argued that Amazon was an independent bookstore. Sigh. I’m just too tired to fight this issue anymore. This is something that authors set themselves up for: always pointing to Amazon on their sites, never giving the small bookstores even a chance, on and on… Who the f*ck couldn’t see this coming? When Blockbuster owned the video distribution market, they did the same damn thing. And do we even need to talk about the record industry? Whenever you have a single company in control of the distribution of an art form, the art is sure to suffer. Always. Without exception. Again, sigh…

It’s far worse than that. They’ve delisted everything. Including things like Virginia Woolf’s Orlando, Gore Vidal, all sorts of health and political books, everything, not just SF. They’re blaming it on a “glitch” but no one is buying it.

And Christopher Rice agrees with you

Yeah, I heard that “glitch” excuse and I never believed it for a second either. If you ask me, I think that they were testing out something and they got caught. Supporting a variety of bookstores is the safest, smartest way for readers to protect their access to books. I hope this message will get through.
